Great for the kids
There is a natural fear and excitement kids have towards sharks. The author does a good job introducing sharks to kids. This is a great book for the kids.

I have given a couple of lectures on fish and kids always questions like "Could a shark eat a whale?" or "Do sharks sleep?". This book does a great job answering your kids questions.

Parents and teacher should have this book available for their kids to read.

The Doctor's Engagement
Published in Hardcover by Harlequin Mills & Boon (April, 2002)
Author: Sarah Morgan
Average review score:

Friendship Leads To Romance
Nurse Holly and Dr. Mark have been best friends since they were in elementary school. They have told each other everything until now. Mark, the lady's man, needs help from his friend to fend off a determined female coworker. Holly, the older virgin, has had something happen to her which she has not divulged to Mark. She has left her job due to this undisclosed event and Mark proposes she come to work with his employer and pretend to be his fiancee. Convincing her, she moves to the town and into his house. Events lead up to Holly noticing Mark as a man instead of a friend and when Mark in the heat of the moment kisses her the relationship flares from there. The previously undisclosed event comes forward and feelings that neither ever realized are confronted to lead to a real engagement. Although this is a medical romance it does not contain as much medical scenery as other books I have read. This is not disappointing to me but some readers expecting more of this may be. It was an enjoyable read.

E. M. Forster
Published in Hardcover by Harcourt (March, 1980)
Author: Lionel Trilling
Average review score:

A Cook's Tour by Trilling of E.M. Forster
E.M. FORSTER by Lionel Trilling

When an eminent American scholar and critic takes as subject for a literary analysis a notable English author a reader can expect a tasty feast for the mind. Trilling does not disappoint.

This brief but erudite book is now over half a century old. It still remains an admirable introduction to E.M. Forster whose five novels have become an esteemed part of the western cannon.

"In America Forster has never established a great reputation." Trilling's comment implies the reason for his study of Forster. And indeed, it is this work that is credited with correcting that oversight.

Lionel Trilling's evaluation meets the criteria for excellent criticism. It is impartial in that although overall it praises, it notes faults. "The quaint, the facetious and the chatty sink his literary criticism below its proper level . . . they even touch, though they never actually harm, the five novels . . . " The second criteria, the enlightenment of potential readers as to an author's intentions and techniques, is likewise amply met. All of Forster's novels are discussed. Many illuminating insights are provided. Forster's short stories are summarily treated. Trilling evidently did not consider short fiction Forster's forte. Lastly, a critic should provide in praise as well as admonition comments that might assist authors to create better works. In this Trilling is at a disadvantage since Forster after the publication of PASSAGE TO INDIA in 1924 completely forsook novel writing. Too bad. Trilling is good medicine for an author.

A caution: the book is aimed at an academic audience. Allusions are made to various other significant authors as in "Forster is not taken in by his Gino as Santayana is by his analogous Mario . . . " Georges Santayana a prominent American philosopher wrote only one novel THE LAST PURITAN in which Mario is a key character. A college degree is not necessarily needed to follow Trilling's discussion. One ought to have, however, a nodding acquaintance with the peaks that comprise western literature's breadth and length.

Essentials Of Learning And Cognition
Published in Hardcover by McGraw-Hill Humanities/Social Sciences/Languages (24 January, 2002)
Author: David L. Morgan
Average review score:

A good book for Classes on Human Learning
I have adopted this text for a class on Human Learning and have found it to be an easily read and useful text. Morgan covers the essentials of "typical" learning modalities...classical, operant and social, and also moves on to address some cognitive issues, which is nice for us teachers who don't necessarily adopt Behaviorist philosophies. The book is written to be easily readable by most college students, though like all texts on learning there is an overemphasis on animal studies which get a bit dry and also are of questionable utility. The text could also benefit from a tad more skepticism regarding the utility of some behavioral technique, particularly given some of the controversies surrounding behavioral therapies for autism (i.e. Lovaas) and other disorders. Nonetheless this book makes for a very helpful text.

The 'rediscovery' of Alaska in 1865
A well documented description of the pace and extent of Russian and American exploration in Alaska. The book focuses on reason of growth and lack thereof in the region in the 19th century. Sherwood also explains the difference in growth from the American 'western movement.' Alaskan history is very interesting. If you are at all interested in exploration or the American frontier and its writings, visit this book.

The Finite Element Method in Heat Transfer Analysis
Published in Paperback by John Wiley & Sons (July, 1996)
Authors: R. W. Lewis, Ken Morgan, H. R. Thomas, and K. N. Seetharamu
Average review score:

It is small book nicely written.
It is a small book nicely written. But with the price, it scares everybody away. One of the sections in this book is particularly useful for illustrating the technique of implementing non-linear calculation of heat transfer. I learned a great deal from there.

The Fountain
Published in Paperback by Academy Chicago Pub (February, 1985)
Author: Charles Morgan
Average review score:

Hawthornden Prize winner
Since 1919 the Hawthornden Prize has been awarded each year to an English writer "for the best work of imaginative literature" and among the winners thereof which I have read are David Garnett's inimitable Lady Into Fox (won in 1923), Kate O'Brien's Without My Cloak (won in 1931), The Power and the Glory (won in 1941), The Price of Glory: Verdun 1916, by Alistair Horne (won in 1963), Mr. Stone and the Knights Companion, by V. S. Naipaul (won in 1964), Monk, by Paul Piers Read (won in 1970), and In Patagonia, by Bruce Chatwin (won in 1977). The Fountain is laid during World War One, in Holland, and concerns an English officer interned there and the English wife of a German officer. The book does considerable philosophizing and the first two-thirds of the book really drug as far as I was concerned. The book picks up in interest after that, but I cannot say I was greatly interested in the prime characters and their excuses for adultery.

From Matter to Spirit: The Result of Ten Years' Experience in Spirit Manifestations: Volume 2, Rise of Vistorian Spiritualism
Published in Library Binding by Routledge (01 March, 2001)
Authors: Bob Gilbert and Elizabeth Sophia De Morgan
Average review score:

reprint of a classic work
Wallace is better known as "the other man" in the history of the discovery of the natural selection concept, and for his early studies on biogeography and tropical nature. But--and this is one of the things that makes him a fascinating figure for study--he was also an avid supporter of spiritualism. This book collects five of his essays on spiritualism (the three that went into the original edition of 1875, plus two added to a new edition published twenty years later). Wallace was a thoughtful and excellent writer, and the three main essays, at least, provide some very interesting fodder for thought--especially the one on David Hume and miracles. Unfortunately, nowhere in this collection can one find any indication of why and how Wallace's adoption of spiritualism fit into his overall worldview, natural selection and all, and why this over 100 year old work is still relevant to today's concerns.... Instead, one ends up scratching one's head and wondering, "Can any of this be true...?" Still, this is just about as good a treatment of why one should be interested in the subject as can be obtained, even now.
